On the face of it, being a plant eater in Peru can seem challenging! Especially considering the national dishes are guinea pig, ceviche and alpaca! We found the majority of restaurants are happy to remove the meat parts of the dish and then class it as a vegetarian meal which is ok, though not the best!
We wanted to try Peruvian cuisine, though doing it in vegan style! Our hunt around the city for Cusco’s best vegan restaurants led us to some amazing places that you are going to love! Hopefully this also saves you a load of research.
Our top 6:
Las Frescas: A lot of Peruvian dishes are carb heavy, sometimes triple carbs in one serving! So this place came as a welcome healthy break! Yummy & very fresh personalised salad bowls and tropical curries that will not only fill you up but give you a boost of energy to help you climb those steep hills! Cost: S/15, cash only.
Vida Vegan Bistro: The best vegan restaurant we’ve been on during our travels so far! Plus its a really nice atmosphere which makes it even better. They serve up traditional Peruvian dishes, fully vegan & bursting with flavour! If you are an insta foodie, the presentation of these dishes will keep you wanting more and more!
Chia: One for a less formal atmosphere. A chilled and humble restaurant that offers a daily set menu and a la carte creative dishes. Tasty food, good local service and very tasty vegan garlic bread! Cost: set menu S/15; a la carte S/40, cash only.
Green point: The most well known vegan restaurant amongst the hipster crew, though not much of a Peruvian following as both clients and staff are predominantly westerners. Good food, live music, atmosphere lacking a bit we think because of its layout. More on the pricey side. Cost: S/60, cards accepted.
The Churro bar: One of our absolute favourites overall and a perfect stop for sweet treats! Everything they bake is vegan and a huge part of the charm is the chilled vibe the owners give, plus their cute labrador! Also a great place to relax for digital nomads! You can read more about our recommendations for cosy bars in Peru here. This is definitely one to visit! Cost: S/12 for churros and chocolate dip, cash only.
Qura: A perfect breakfast stop! Really tasty açai bowls packed with flavour and energy giving you a great start to the day. A local vibe even though popular amongst travellers, very cosy setting and in a great location to explore (San Blas).
So thats it! Our top 6 pit stops for vegan food. Let us know what you think when you try them. Have you found any more? Add them to the comments below!
