First things first: Hobbiton in Matamata is not only for Lord of the Rings fans. The movie set is a fantastic day out that will keep you smiling every step you take. It’s not only the cute Hobbit holes, though also all the nature that’s arround the village. It’s truly magical and seems like Hobbits actually live there!
What we loved most, is that the set is now built sustainably, allowing visitors from all over the world to experience it – real trees, real plants and flowers, the attention to detail is incredible.
Here’s the answers to questions you may have when planning your visit to Hobbiton:
Where is the Hobbiton Movie Set?
Hobbiton is located in Alexander farm in the Waikato area, just 16km from the town of Matamata, in the north island. Peter Jackson and his location team were flying over New Zealand, looking for filming locations when they found these never ending rolling hills with a massive oak tree. It was the perfect spot for Hobbiton.
How to get to Hobbiton from Auckland?
Hobbiton is about 2 and a half hours from Auckland (223km), with a very easy drive through the State Highway 27.

Can I stay in Hobbiton?
We also dreamt of staying in Hobbiton, though at the moment it’s not possible. Why?! We asked the same question… In short it’s an external set, meaningg the actual hobbit holes (or houses) each just have a small space inside to open the door. Hopefully one day they will build a Hobbit hole airbnb… imagine the queues!
